Artist Statement – Caroline Davies Choi

I have been wandering the inter-tidal zone, fossicking in rockpools and observing the delightful weedy & watery microcosms that occur there for as long as I can remember.

I am inspired by early female naturalists of the Victorian era- their seaweed collections & cyanotype prints inform the pared back aesthetic of these photographs, which are mostly photographed as single specimens. However as I prefer minimal intervention they are also framed and captured as found.

To my eye these are the most magical botanical creations, with many found specimens akin to delicately assembled bouquets and corsages. They speak to me of another time and place, while remaining wholly part of our world.

As they become increasingly under threat due to rising ocean temperatures, climate change and pollution, I also seek to capture them with a degree of reverence. I hope to highlight their fragility. The ocean and coastline is the altar at which I worship.
